The participation of seven Brazilian tanneries at India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai, India, has set a remarkable landmark: US$ 4 million in business during the event’s three days, between February 1st and 3rd. The figure amply exceeds the 2015 and 2016 editions (US$ 400 thousand and US$ 2,96 million, respectively), showing India’s potential as strong target market for leather made in Brazil.

The Brazilian participation at IILF has the support from Brazilian Leather, project dedicated to promote leather exports and coordinated by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

For the next 12 months, the expectation is that US$ 23 million in business are generated in connection to the event. Such positive numbers serve to reinforce the excellent impression Brazilian tanneries were left with following the event and leather exports to India. “We see great opportunities ahead”, says Ildemar Marchi de Almeida, from JBS Couros.

Rogério Cunha, from CICB’s Commercial Intelligence Department, explains that the Brazilian Leather project has helped to build a strong business relation with India over the last three years, since the country was identified as a potential buyer of leather of high aggregate value. “We began with a prospecting mission, establishing business relations with representative entities from India’s leather and footwear sectors, case studies and the participation at IILF”, highlights Cunha. Therefore, current results are the consequence of a collective work conducted by companies and well-executed actions coordinated by the Brazilian leather sector.
