“Coming sees CSCB as a major domestic and international advance for the leather segment. Companies that conquer the certification will have a significant market differentiation.” This is how Márcio Bittar, director of Coming tannery, evaluates the Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability (CSCB). The company has just joined the program promoted by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB).

Coming will now begin to work under the program’s 173 indicators, covering criteria such as water and energy consumption, restricted substances, productive performance, waste management, and relation to collaborators. CSCB has the support from Brazilian Leather, project dedicated to promote leather exports and coordinated by CICB in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

Located in Goiás, a state from the Center-West region of Brazil, and with more than 30 years of history, Coming is used to showcase its articles in the world’s main leather trade fairs. By implementing the criteria highlighted by CSCB, the company aims at improving its performance indicators, as well as promote the professional and social growth of its collaborators and associate the three pillars of sustainability with the activities that are already part of the company. “We want to promote our work in a very clear way to the interested parties and compare our performance with the benchmarking offered by the program”, says Márcio.

In order to get the certification, every tannery must go through a consultancy stage, working under the 173 indicators created by a Special Study Committee from within ABNT (the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards). It is only after completing this stage that the company is able to ask for an audit by a certifying body accredited by Inmetro. CSCB holds four levels: Bronze (for those who follow up to 50% of the indicators applicable from each of the four dimensions), Silver (75%), Gold (90%) and Diamond (100%).
