World’s most important technical leather event, the XXXIIIIULTCS Congress (International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies) was a true success. Held in Brazil – in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul – between November 24th and 27th, the event left speakers, sponsors and journalists highly pleased.

Development manager at Baska Tannery, from Chile, Juan Rojas Ruíz was among the professionals who took part in the meeting. From his first participation at a IULTCS Congress, he takes back home a very positive feeling towards the level of lectures and works presented. “The topics brought to discussion were just excellent. They were definitely in tune with every tannery’s needs”, says Ruíz. “It was a rich experience. I think this is the kind of event that every leather professional should participate.”

Joel Bauermann, a representative from ‘bronze’ sponsor Buckman, was also in the international event for the first time. According to Bauermann, eight people from the company took part in the meeting – and he says they all approved it. “If the objective was to update professionals, present them with the latest studies and developments, the event lived up to its goal. All lectures were great. Topics were diverse, from the use of collagen to leather finishing. Our team will take part in the Congress’ next edition in India, in 2017, for sure”, he says.

Executive director at Comesa/LLPI (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa/Leather and Leather Products Institute) in Ethiopia, Mwinyikione Mwinyihija also leaves the event with a positive impression. According to him, the meeting actually exceeded his expectations in terms of organization and for the high level of discussions. “I really enjoyed it. It was a truly excellent event”, he adds.

Among the journalists who covered the event, the IULTCS Congress also left a great impression. Martin Ricker, editor of British magazine International Leather Maker, defined the topics discussed as “essential for the everyday routine of the leather industry worldwide”.

“The event was pretty well organized. It brought up a good mix of themes for discussion. Also, it gathered the largest public at a IULTCS Congress in the last ten years”, says Ricker.

The place chosen by ABQTIC (the Brazilian Association of Leather Industry Technicians and Chemists), entity responsible for organizing the thirty third IULTCS Congress in Brazil, was praised by Mauricio Herzovich, from Cuero América (Argentina). “The city of Novo Hamburgo, in the South of Brazil, holds a strong connection with the leather and footwear industries. Therefore, there couldn't be a better choice of region to host the event.”

Teresa Raquel de Oliveira Bastos, from Globo Rural Magazine (Brasil), described the XXXIII IULTCS Congress as moment for great interviews, since it gathered important leaders from all over the globe. “The meeting motivated a great number of articles, specially related to sustainability”, says Bastos.

This was the second time Brazil hosted the IULTCS Congress. The first was in 1993, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.

The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies congregates entities that represent leather chemists and technicians from all over the globe. Founded in 1897, it promotes the international meeting every two years.

In 2017 the city of Chennai, in the South of India, will host the event. For more information about it, please visit www.iultcs2017.org
