Brazilian leather exports show an expected decrease in January 2015

The Department of Foreign Trade from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC) has just released the preliminary numbers regarding Brazilian exports in January 2015. In the case of the hides and skins sector, exports have reached US$182 million.

The value represents a decrease of 9,9% in relation to the same period last year, when exports reached US$201,96 million. In comparison to December 2014 there was also a decrease, this time of 28,6%.

According to executive president of the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), José Fernando Bello, the reduction in the value was expected by the segment, following a series of positive numbers in recent years. “The decrease is a reflection of the scenario faced by all sectors of the economy. We are aware that 2015 should be a year of challenges, but we believe it is just one more phase of the market’s cycle”, says Bello.

The complete numbers regarding Brazilian exports in the first month of 2015 are to be release by MDIC in the following weeks.
