The Brazilian leather and skin segment has registered an expected decrease in exports in May 2015. According to numbers released by the Department of Foreign Trade from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), with further analysis from the Department of Intelligence at the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), the sector reached US$ 205 million last month. The number represents a reduction of 20,5% in relation to the same month last year, when exports reached a total of US$ 258,811 million. In relation to April, exports fell by 0,6% (US$ 206,183 million).

As for the amount of hides, considering only the cattle hides, in May it was shipped 2.579 million pieces, a slight increase of 0.1% compared to April, when total was 2.575 million.

According to executive presidente of CICB, José Fernando Bello, the Brazilian leather industry is watching closely difficulties faced by nearly all segments in Brazil. The sector awaits, however, for business to come back at full speed, which should happen from the beginning of next year. “Everyone is aware that 2015 isn’t and will not be a positive year for Brazilian economy. More than trying to find ways to face this tempestuous period, leather production companies look forward to 2016, that is sure to bring back a growth in exports”, says Bello.

The participation of item ‘leather and skins’ in Brazilian exports has remained at 1,4% in May.
