Brazil exported in May a total of US$ 258,8 million in hides and skins, according to information from the Department of Foreign Trade – Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). The number represents an increase of 12,9% in comparison to the same month last year, bringing the yearly accumulate to a total of US$ 1,219 billion, a growth of 22,8% in relation to the same period in 2013.

The Department of Intelligence from the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industries (CICB) developed a careful analysis over the data released by MDIC, underlining a positive forecast for leather produced in Brazil – specially finished leather, with more added value. “May represents the highest value of finished leather exports ever (US$ 142 million), with an increase of 14,6% in comparison to the same month in 2013”, says executive president of CICB, José Fernando Bello. He also emphasizes market diversification as a positive highlight within the exports scenario this year: significant growths in value in the yearly accumulate in comparison to 2013 were registered following sales to Japan (251%), Uruguay (195,7%), South Africa (135,7%) and Malaysia (101,1%). Traditional markets such as China and the US have also confirmed the growth trend, with highs of 31,1% and 12,4% respectively, while Italy registered a downfall of 8,3% in the yearly accumulate.

Rio Grande do Sul went back to the first position in the list of Brazilian States who export leather the most, overtaking São Paulo, who were at the top until April this year. Rio Grande do Sul’s participation on sales to the international market in 2014 represent 19,8% of the yearly accumulate, while companies from São Paulo answer to 18,9% of leather exports.
